Service Plus PlumbingPrevent Your Pipes From Freezing this Winter

With winter right around the corner, it’s time to be aware of potential plumbing problems that can occur when it’s cold outside. Frozen pipes arenot a common issue, but can be especially in areas where the temperatures commonly fall below freezing. However, taking preventive measures now can save you much damage, and subsequently money, later on.

The first sign of a frozen pipe is a change in water pressure. If this happens, call a professional immediately. To avoid this situation, let cold water trickle from different faucets in your house even when the temps are their coldest. Water moving in your pipes will not freeze. Make sure you seal all air leaks so an icy blast doesn’t reach your pipes.

Warm air circulating around your pipes in the walls of your home will also prevent them freezing. Keeping your house above 55 degrees will help as will circulating warm air around the pipes under the sinks in the bathroom and kitchen.

Make sure that the snow outside is not blocking water drains and your sump pump discharge line. Freezing can occur if snow is blocking these or if puddles form and then freeze over. Finally, prevent your water meter from freezing by keep its lid closed.
