How to Use a Plunger

A plunger is an inexpensive plumbing device that can remove clogs from your Henderson, NV toilets, sinks and tubs. You must use the right type of plunger and the proper techniques to clear clogs in your pipes. The two most common types of plungers are standard and toilet.

If you want to clear a sink drain, you need a standard, cup-shaped plunger. As the name implies, a toilet plunger is designed to clear clogged toilets. This device has a funnel-shaped end that matches the contour of the toilet bowl. It provides more suction power than a sink plunger.

When you use a plunger on a sink, you must ensure that the stopper does not block the drain. In some cases, you may need to remove the stopper. You must use tape or a wet cloth to block the overflow port. If you do not block the port, the pressure will flow out of the opening instead of pushing the clog down the drain.

Fill your sink with enough water to cover at least three inches of the plunger. You can form a tighter seal by applying petroleum jelly to the plunger’s rim. Place the plunger over the drain, and forcefully pump approximately 15 times without breaking the seal between the plunger and the sink.
