Finding a Hidden Leak
Most homeowners do not realize that they have a water leak until their water bills increase for no apparent reason. A dripping faucet is an obvious problem, but a leaky toilet can evade detection. A Henderson NV plumber can assist you with this problem.
To determine if your toilet is leaking, you can add a small amount of food coloring to the water tank. If the color appears in the bowl, it means that the flapper valve at the bottom of the tank is no longer providing a watertight seal. You can correct this problem by cleaning or replacing the valve. Wet spots on the ceiling, floors or along the walls are telltale signs of a leak.
If you cannot isolate the leak, turn off the supply line valves to all your plumbing fixtures. Locate your main water meter. It is usually located inside a metal box in your front yard close to the street. Look at the dial on the meter, and determine if it is moving. If you turned off your plumbing, the dial should not move. If it does, you may have a leak in the main supply line leading to your house. Another possible sign of a main line crack or leak is a puddle of water in your yard.
