Flushing your water heater at least once a year can lengthen the serviceable life of the appliance. This maintenance project requires a garden hose, a 5-gallon pail and a wrench. Locate the valve that controls the flow of water into the unit. In the event of an emergency, you will need to close the valve to prevent water loss.

Securely connect the garden hose to the drain installed on the bottom of the water heater. Position the hose so that water flows away from your home or down a drain. If necessary, use the wrench to gently open the drain valve. It may be difficult to loosen the valve if you rarely flush the water heater or if you have an older model. Use precautions because the water inside the tank is hot and can burn your skin. After approximately five minutes, fill the pail with water from the unit. Allow the water to sit undisturbed for several minutes. If sediment is visible, flush the unit again. Repeat these steps until there is no sediment in the pail.
