Checking the seal on a toilet bowl

Water standing or stains in the bathroom shouldn’t be ignored. This is especially true when the water is leaking or staining the area around a toilet bowl. These stains could be coming from a tank leak, but it also could be coming from the bowl itself. Don’t wait to fix this issue! This type of leak allows waste to seep in to your home and make it an unhealthy place to live.

Turn off the water to the toilet.

When checking to see where the water is coming from, make sure there is no flow to the toilet itself. There is always shut off valve beside the toilet to make this step easy.

Drain the water from the tank and bowl

Flush the toilet until there is no longer any water coming out. For the water that is left in the tank, use a sponge or towels to soak up the excess water.

Remove the tank and look for cracks.

There are usually two bolts at the bottom of the tank. Remove these and take off the tank. Look for cracks in the tank and bowl.

Remove Bowl

There are bolts on either side of the bowl. Remove these bolts and pull up the tank. Look at the wax seal between the bowl and the floor. This seal will need to be replaced.
