Troubleshooting a Noisy or Jammed Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals should not make loud or unusual noises. The most common reason for this problem is that flatware or another dense object has fallen inside the unit. Metal objects can break the flyweights. You must remove the obstruction before it jams the disposal blades. If the unit makes a loud humming sound when you turn it on, the blades are already jammed in place. If you are uncomfortable working on a disposal in Henderson NV, give us a call.
You can fix a jammed disposal with an Allen wrench. Insert the tool inside the hole located on the bottom of the disposal. Work the wrench back and forth until the blades are free. The safest way to remove an item from inside a disposal is with a pair of pliers. Do not place your hand inside the garbage disposal tub unless it is unplugged or the switch and circuit breaker controlling the unit are in the “Off” position. Serious injuries can occur if the unit activates while your hand is in the compartment.
You should also check for loose mounting brackets. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver or wrench. If the unit is loose, water can bypass the seals and wash away the grease that lubricates the bearings. This will cause your unit to wear out faster. Give our team a call if your unit makes loud noises while the tub is empty. An experienced Las Vegas area plumber can inspect your disposal and determine the best way to correct the problem.
