9 Epic DIY Plumbing Fails

We can do it our self, they said. We’ll save money, they said. Dedicated DIY homeowners have a knack for turning a simple $20 repair in to a $400 emergency. At one time or another, all plumbers have been called to a job to fix what the homeowner has already tried to repair. Enjoy a little chuckle with these real-life, top 9 epic DIY plumbing fails.

1. Trying to rig an outhouse by using an inverted traffic cone as a funnel between the toilet seat and the pit.
2. Taking a short cut by re-routing water lines through the ceiling.
3. Working on a water supply line and forgetting to shut the water valve off beforehand.
4. Using duct tape or rubber cement to fix leaky pipe.
5. Dry fitting pipe pieces and forgetting to glue them- especially when it involves the sewage exit pipe.
6. Buying a snake from the hardware store to fix a clog and inadvertently breaking drain pipe while using it. This is even worse when the owner doesn’t notice the break until later, when someone pulls the drain plug.
7. Trying to re-route a water line to an outdoor spigot and realizing they connected the hot water line instead.
8. Installing a check valve… backwards.
9. Gluing 9 joint couplings together because they don’t have the right length of pipe for the job.
