Dealing with Low Water Pressure

FixturesResolve Low Water Pressure Problems

Most homeowner want to do whatever they can in order to have the best water pressure in their home. After all, low pressure can be frustrating, especially when you want to take a shower or use your garden hose. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to solve low flow or low water pressure in your home. The first step is to identify the problem. Whether it is a water leak somewhere in your system, problems with a regulator, buildup of mineral deposits, or some other problem, identifying the problem is your first step in solving it.

Some problems will be fairly easy to fix, such as cleaning aerators. If there is debris in your line, whether from rust, algae or other materials in your water supply, these can easily clog aerators and leave poor water flow at the faucet. Fortunately, if this is the problem, it can be resolved quickly and easily by unscrewing the cylinder found on the spout of your faucet and removing any debris.

Sometimes the problem can be with the regulator. The regulator is located outside, usually below a water connection for your hose. If the regulator goes bad, it can cause water pressure problems in your home. If you need a new regulator, this is a project that is best left for a professional plumber to handle.

If the problem is the pressure of the water coming into your home, there are still some things you can do. For example, increasing the size of your water pipes or adding a pressure boost system can help.
